Galactic Civilizations II: Dread Lords is a turn-based PC strategy game where the player takes on the role of leader of a space-faring civilization. As leader, the player directs his civilization's starships throughout the galaxy to colonize planets, establish trade routes, fight wars, and ultimately control the galaxy. Players must balance their diplomatic power, industrial strength, military might, technological resources, and cultural endeavors to reach their goal of ultimate victory. Facing the player is up to nine computer-controlled civilizations each with its own unique artificial intelligence engine.

Alien civilizations can make treaties, trade agreements and alliances. Victory often means working with other civilizations cooperatively in order to fight off stronger, more aggressive races. GalCivII offers multiple paths to victory including the standard military conquest option, creating a universal galactic alliance, technology victory, and a cultural domination victory.

The game includes both a sand box mode where players can play individual games on randomly generated or existing maps, as well as a multi-mission campaign that takes them through the story of Galactic Civilizations II. Once released, players will also be able to compete online via the "Galactic Metaverse" in which individual games are submitted to GalCiv.com and made part of the player’s epic history.
